Mid-Century [Modern]

Mid-century modern style decor is a design trend that combines elements of the 20th century with a modern twist. It draws inspiration from the glamour of the art deco movement of the 20’s to the European furniture designers of the 1950s. Many graduates of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, such as Ray and Charles Eames, Florence Knoll, and Eero Saarinen, contributed to the Midcentury style furniture. This style is characterized by clean lines, organic shapes, and a mix of materials such as wood, metal, and glass. Comfort through ergonomics was successfully blended with elegance and sophistication.

The Mid-century modern is perfect for those who appreciate the comfort and simplicity of classic design elements. Colors for this style can be calming monochromatic with soft colors of silvery blues and gold or primary colors that incorporate abstract patterns, geometric prints, and bold stripes.

Minimalism, clean lines, simplicity, and glamour are a few of the anchors for a mid-century modern and contemporary style.

Philip Mitchell beautifully incorporates mid-century modern into his interiors. Learn more in his book “Collected Interiors”.
